Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a volunteer assisting other adults in reaching their literacy goals!   There are 3 simple steps to becoming a certified tutor* with the Literacy Volunteers - Greater Portland affiliate. 

* In addition to becoming a tutor, there are other volunteer opportunities available ... administrative volunteer, board member, special events!  Call 780-1352 for more information or details. 

STEP ONE - Fill out the Volunteer/Tutor Application below

STEP TWO - Attend an Orientation Meeting.  Prospective volunteers will have an opportunity to decide how they can best support Literacy Volunteers - Greater Portland.  A prerequisite for training, this meeting is held prior to the core of the new tutor training program.  It provides an overview of our programs and outlines the training and tutoring process.  Prospective volunteers will have an opportunity to ask questions and to clarify their volunteer commitment.

STEP THREE - Complete new tutor training, provided by certified Literacy Volunteers trainers.  The training is approximately 22 hours. 

You must attend all sessions in a training series in order to become a certified tutor.  Our upcoming training schedule is listed below.

NEW TUTOR TRAINING SCHEDULE

SPRING 2009 SERIES  -  Registrations accepted until Saturday, June 27
ORIENTATION - Attend only one - Additional Orientations may be scheduled depending
on response.
   Tuesday, June 16   5:30-7:00 pm     Unum/Darling Ave, 123 Darling Ave, S Portland
   Wednesday, June 17 2:00-3:30 pm  Salvation Army, 297 Cumberland Ave (parking in rear; please use street entrance on Cumberland Ave; directly across from Portland High School) 

BASIC LITERACY TUTOR TRAINING - This training will focus on strategies and activities for working with low-literacy learners (NRS levels 1-4), emphasizing basic literacy skills for native English speaking adult learners, and including implications for English language learners. 
   Training:        All sessions required
   Tuesday, June 30             Wednesday, July 1
   Tuesday, July    7             Wednesday, July 8
   All sessions are 5:30-8:30 pm.

ELL TUTOR TRAINING - This training in tutoring for English Language Learning will emphasize beginning and intermediate level activities and strategies.  It is not necessary for tutors to speak another language.
