Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a volunteer assisting other adults in reaching their literacy goals! There are 3 simple steps to becoming a certified tutor* with the Literacy Volunteers - Greater Portland affiliate.

STEP TWO
- Attend an Orientation Meeting. Prospective volunteers will have an opportunity to decide how they can best support Literacy Volunteers - Greater Portland. A prerequisite for training, this meeting is held prior to the core of the new tutor training program. It provides an overview of our programs and outlines the training and tutoring process. Prospective volunteers will have an opportunity to ask questions and to clarify their volunteer commitment.
STEP THREE - Complete new tutor training, provided by certified Literacy Volunteers trainers. The training is approximately 22 hours.
You must attend all sessions in a training series in order to become a certified tutor. Our upcoming training schedule is listed below.

BASIC LITERACY TUTOR TRAINING - This training will focus on strategies and activities for working with low-literacy learners (NRS levels 1-4), emphasizing basic literacy skills for native English speaking adult learners, and including implications for English language learners.
