LV- Greater Portland offers, FREE, confidential, student-centered, individual and small group tutoring to adults seeking to develop the literacy skills they need to reach important life goals like reading their first books, obtaining citizenship, helping their children with homework, taking care of personal bills and finding employment. As the literacy skills of adult learners improve so do their confidence, self-esteem and independence. We aim to impact the quality of life of adults by teaching them the skills they need to take better care of themselves and their families in the areas of health, education, work and social and civic responsibility.

It is estimated as many as one in five adults in Maine have low literacy skills, impacting their ability to find and maintain employment, help their children with school, or be informed, active citizens. Others still enrolled in high school struggle due to poor reading/comprehension skills, and may not stay in school without finding the help they need.

We train volunteers to provide instruction in the following areas:
• Basic Literacy & Life Skills
• English as a Second Language (ESL)
• Adult Education classroom support
• Conversation
• Citizenship
• GED Preparation/Standardized Testing

• Licensing (Maine Driver’s License, CDL)
